Two journalists and several students of Dhaka University (DU) were ‘beaten’ during an anti-narcotics drive of police at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday evening.
The injured are Tofayel Ahmed of Banglanews- 24.com, and Kawsar Ahmed Ripon of Ajker Patrika. The incident sparked protests, with students staging demon stration and sit-in in front of Shahbag Police Station.
Videos show several police officers beating Tofayel. Ripon was also reportedly assaulted when he tried to protect his colleague.
Police also detained three students of DU. A video shows Naeem speaking with DMP DC Masud Alam when a police officer suddenly drags him from behind, throws him to the ground, and beats him.
DC Masud Alam described the incident as a misunderstanding. He said a police officer was injured when a suspected drug addict stabbed him. Amid the tense situation, officers mistakenly confronted the journalists, as they were not carrying visible identity cards. The DC apologised for the incident and assured that action would be taken against those responsible.
In protest, students held a sit-in in front of Shahbag Police Station on Tuesday.
