A delegation from Germany's parliamentary committee on environment and climate issues has concluded a six-day visit to Bangladesh, underscoring the urgency of global cooperation in tackling climate change and environmental challenges.
The delegation, led by Michael Thews, Deputy Chairman of the German Bundestag Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, visited Bangladesh from April 7 to 12.
The team included members of parliament from multiple political parties, reflecting a broad political consensus on climate engagement, said a spokesman of the Embassy said on Wednesday.
During their visit, the delegation held high-level consultations in Dhaka, including a meeting with Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul AwalMintoo. Both sides emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation and explored future collaboration on environmental protection, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.
The delegation's itinerary combined policy discussions with field visits across the country. In Savar, members examined the environmental impact of Bangladesh's leather and textile industries, key pillars of the national economy.
Travelling to Khulna, the team met local authorities to assess the impacts of climate change at the city level and observed German-supported adaptation and livelihood projects. They later visited the Sundarbans, where they explored ongoing biodiversity conservation efforts in one of the world's largest mangrove ecosystems.
The final leg of the visit took the delegation to Satkhira, a climate-vulnerable coastal district, where they met communities benefiting from German development assistance.
Throughout the visit, discussions focused on Bangladesh's acute vulnerability to climate change, including rising sea levels, flooding, and environmental degradation.
