Inhuman human traffickers must be punished

Shama affirms govt stance

FE REPORT | Monday, 30 March 2026

Those involved in human trafficking must be brought to justice, says the State Minister for foreign affairs, as reports emerged that Bangladeshis are among dozens of migrants who died attempting to cross the Mediterranean.
Speaking to reporters at the foreign ministry on Sunday, Shama Obaed described the incident as "deeply unfortunate" and highlighted the vulnerability of migrants lured by trafficking networks operating across multiple countries.
Reports have it that at least 22 migrants died from hunger and dehydration while travelling by boat from Libya towards Italy. Survivors said the victims' bodies were thrown into sea during the journey.
According to the minister, Bangladeshi diplomatic missions have been in contact with authorities in Greece, where some survivors were rescued.
