No decision yet on President's removal

Restrictions on visit to St Martin’s

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 23 October 2024

No government decision has yet been made regarding removal of President Shahabuddin from his post, said a spokesman for the Chief Adviser office on Tuesday at a press briefing.
"Since no decision has been taken in this regard, so it is unwise to comment on this," said deputy press secretary to the Chief Adviser, Azad Mazumder, when he was asked through which procedure the President might be removed.
The briefing was told that that the remarks made by Law Adviser Asif Nazrul about the President on Monday echoed the view of the interim government.
President Sahabuddin, while announcing his decision to dissolve parliament, said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and he accepted it.
But, on Sunday, he told a local daily that he had not seen the resignation letter.
His perceived double talk drew flakes from home and abroad, and in response to this repercussion, the law adviser said that the President violated his oath by telling a "lie".
Different pro-government organisations also demanded that the President abdicate immediately.
However, the media briefing was told that the government has restricted tourist movement to the St Martin Island in the Bay of Bengal, which is in a vulnerable position.
According to the 4-month restrictions from November to February, tourists can go to the coral island in November but cannot have night stay there.
In December and January they can go and have night stay but the number of the daily visitors will be limited to 2000.
And in February they tourists cannot go to the island because cleaning works will be carried out in that month, said deputy press secretary Apurba Jahangir while briefing the press.
