Vegetable prices in Chattogram's kitchen markets have begun to slide after a sharp hike during the first week of Ramadan, bringing much-needed relief to consumers, reports bdnews24.com.
A visit to the city's Reazuddin Bazar on Friday showed that most vegetable prices have dropped by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg within a week.
Prices of broiler chickens and eggs have also seen a downward trend.
Retailers and consumers noted that prices typically soar at the start of Ramadan, only to stabilise as the month progresses.
"Supply is currently robust, and the initial rush of buyers has subsided," said Mohammad, identified with a single name, a retail seller at Reazuddin Bazar.
He added that while winter vegetables are becoming cheaper as the season ends, new summer arrivals like okra and bitter gourd remain relatively expensive.
Tomatoes are selling for Tk 40-45, eggplants at Tk 40-50, and cabbage at Tk 20-25 per kg.
Iftar essentials such as green chillies, which sold for Tk 140-160 last week, have dropped to Tk 80 per kg. Carrots and coriander leaves are priced at Tk 40 per kg.
Broiler chickens are being sold at Tk 180 per kg, down from Tk 200 last Friday. Sonali chickens are priced between Tk 300 and Tk 310, down from Tk 320 last week.
Broiler eggs are retailing at Tk 100-105 per dozen, while local onions are selling for Tk 45-50 per kg.
Hasan Mahmud, a private service holder, told bdnews24.com that the market seems to have cooled down.
"Last week, prices were hiked as traders usually do right before Ramadan. Today, the prices are
much more reasonable," he said.
