CHATTOGRAM, Apr 24: The 110th edition of Jabberer Boli Khela, a wrestling competition in the greater Chattogram region, begins here tomorrow (Thursday).
The historic sporting event of Chittagonians, popularly known as 'Jabberer Boli Khela' is passing 110 years in 2019.
The first such competition of the wrestlers of the Chattogram and adjoining areas was held in 1909.
Since then, the sporting event has become an integral part of the traditional culture here for decades.
The wrestling contest will be held at the historic Lal Dighi Maidan in the port city.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police commissioner Mahabubur Rahman will inaugurate the function where Chattogram city father AJM Nasir Uddin will be the chief guest.
Several TV channels will telecast live the spectator sporting event from the historic ground.
To coincide with the sporting gala, a three-day folk festival began on Wednesday.
This year, Grameenphone is the sponsor of the 110th edition of the sport.
Hundreds of shops, stalls and display centres of handicrafts, toys, household items, pottery articles and sweetmeats have been set up at the fairground.
The Abdul Jabber Smriti Boli Khela and festival committee has sought everybody's help to maintain law and order on the occasion.
'Bolies' (wrestlers) from coastal Ukhiya, Teknaf, Chakoria and offshore islands of Moheshkhali, Kutubdia in Cox's Bazar and coastal areas of Banshkhali, Anowara and Satkania in Chattogram participate in the event.
Many from adjoining three hill districts and other neighbouring districts of Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla and Chandpur also join the competition.
People from all walks of life have descended here from different parts of the region to watch the century-old wrestling and enjoy the festival.
