2nd ISSF Int'l Solidarity Archery begins today

The 2nd Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) International Solidarity Archery Championship, a World Ranking Tournament, begins at the Moulana Bhashani National Stadium in the city today (Sunday), reports UNB.

The Championship was approved by World Archery and World Archery Asia.

The qualifying rounds of Recurve Men and Compound Women will be held this (Sunday) morning although the inaugural ceremony of the meet will be held in the afternoon at 3 pm.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Shikder will inaugurate the meet as the chief guest while Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association Syed Shaheed Reza will be the special guest on the occasion.

A total of 74 archers from 18 countries, including non-Muslim Nepal, will compete in the four-day competition, organised by Bangladesh Archery Federation (BAF).

General Secretary of Bangladesh Archery Federation Kazi Rajibuddin Ahmed Chapal disclosed details of the tournament at a press conference at the Dutch-Bangla Auditorium of Bangladesh Olympic Association in the city on Saturday afternoon.

ISSF Secretary General Mohammed Selah Al Gamas from Saudi Arabia was present at the function as a guest of honour where BAF President Lt Gen Mohammad Moinul Islam (retd) addressed the function, also attended by tournament's technical official Ashraf Sayed Abdellatif Dahroug of Egypt and technical delegate Saad Ahmed Al Mashhadani of Iraq.

Bangladesh, who were assigned to host the five consecutive ISSF championships, will field the biggest team in the meet with 16 archers, followed by war-torn Iraq with 10 archers. Non-Muslim Nepal, who are participating in the meet as an invited team, will field nine archers.

Participating countries are: Azerbaijan, Chad, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Nepal, Morocco, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Uganda, Mauritania, Djibouti, Pakistan, Estonia and hosts Bangladesh.
