KARACHI, Feb 28 (Agencies): Jos Buttler said on Friday he is to step down as England's limited-overs captain
after a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign ended with them failing to reach the semi-finals.
"I'm going to stand down as England captain, it's the right decision for me and the team," the 34-year-old said at a press conference.
England failed to retain either their T20 and 50-over World Cup titles under Buttler's captaincy. The 34-year-old will lead England for the final time in their last group match against South Africa today (Saturday), according to BBC Sport. England have lost 15 of their last 21 one-day internationals, including defeats against Australia and Afghanistan that ended their Champions Trophy campaign.
"It's the right time for me and the team," said Buttler.
After taking over as white-ball captain in June 2022 following the retirement of Eoin Morgan, Buttler led England to glory in that year's T20 World Cup in Australia.
However, he oversaw two disappointing defences of their limited-overs global titles - the 2023 50-over World Cup in India and the T20 version in the Caribbean last year.
