North suffer batting jolt as Razzak takes five

Two centuries by Abdul Mazid and Shadman Islam enabled Walton Central Zone to pile up a huge total of 406 for 4 in 89 overs in the first innings against Islami Bank East Zone on the 1st day of the 4-day first class Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) match at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The Central Zone opted to bat first after winning the toss. They made the good total featuring 204 runs in the 4th wicket stand by opener Shadman Islam and one down Abdul Mazid.

Despite the departure of opener Saif Hasan (21), two down Marshall Ayub (14) and number five Mehrab Hossain Junior (25) contributed 178 runs in 44.4 overs. Shadman Islam pairing with Abdul Mazid carried the team total to 382 runs in 82.5 overs.

One down Abdul Mazid hammered team's highest 159 runs off 182 balls featuring 18 fours and six sixes before he retired hurt. Opener Shadman Islam contributed 157-ball 112 runs, hitting 11 fours and three sixes.

Besides, number six Shuvagata Hom made a half century scoring unbeaten 50 off 49 balls with the help of six boundaries. Number seven batsman Mosharraf Hossain scored not out seven runs, playing 24 balls, including a boundary.

National coloured all-rounder Shohag Gazi grabbed three wickets for 140 runs. Abu Jayed took one for 36 runs.

In the day's other league match at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna, Prime Bank South Zone scored 115 runs for 1 in 29 overs to trail by 72 runs with nine wickets in hand. The defending champions BCB North Zone were dismissed for 187 runs in 58.3 overs on the first day of the four-day affairs on Tuesday.

For the North Zone, lower order Suhrawardy Shuvo contributed team highest 59 runs off 84 balls, featuring eight boundaries. One down Nazmul Hossain Shanta scored a half century making 120-ball 50 runs, including six fours.

Besides, opener Mizanur Rahman added 22 runs off 25 balls with three fours, tail-ender Shafiul Islam made 31-ball 14 runs, also with three boundaries. Two down Farhaf Hossain scored 15-ball 12 runs, hitting two fours for the North Zone. Veteran national spinner Abdur Razzak reached another landmark of taking five-wicket haul conceding 53 runs. Another spinner Saqlain Sajib took two for 20 runs.

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, in his first appearance in the league, took one wicket for 49 runs in his 12-over spell with two maidens. Kamrul Islam Rabbi grabbed one wicket for 43 runs.

In reply, Prime Bank South Zone opened the first innings in the afternoon and scored 115 for 1 in 29 overs.

National opener Anamul Haque and top order national coloured batsman Imrul Kayes were on batting with 52 and 51 runs respectively. National opener Soumya Sarkar (12) departed for 21 runs in 4.3 overs.
