Mahmudullah faces fine for slow over-rate

Two-match suspension for SL captain

March 13, 2018 00:00:00

Bangladesh T20I side stand-in captain Mahmudullah Riyad was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for 'minor over-rate' while Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal received a two-match suspension due to a "serious over-rate offence" during the 3rd T20I of the Nidahas Trophy in Colombo on Saturday, reports UNB.

Apart from Mahmudullah, other members of the squad received 10 per cent fines as they were found one over short as per Article 2.5.1, which related to the 'minor over-rate offences'.

Mahmudullah pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need of a formal hearing.

As he being found guilty of a serious over-rate offence, Chandimal will miss out his side's matches against India and Bangladesh on March 12 and 16 respectively, while each of his players received a fine of 60 per cent of their match fees, said an ICC release on Sunday.

Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the fine after Chandimal's side was ruled to be four overs short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

Chandimal pleaded not guilty to the offence, and, as such, Broad announced his decision following a hearing that took place on Sunday afternoon. The hearing was attended by the match officials and the Sri Lanka cricket team management.

In accordance with Article 2.5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to serious over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for the first two overs and 20 per cent per additional over their side failed to bowl in the allotted time, while the captain receives two suspension points.
