Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS), has finally touched the milestone hosting the 100th ODI through a match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe as part of the triangular series in Mirpur in the city on Wednesday, report agencies.
The SBNCS has become the sixth venue to achieve such a feat after Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE (231 matches), Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia (154), Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia (148), Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe (136), and R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (124). Compared to the five other stadiums that have reached this landmark, Mirpur has taken the shortest time - a little over 11 years.
Mirpur is more than just a cricket venue, and it is a story onto itself, having smoothly taken over from more celebrated Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS), which used to be the spiritual home of Bangladesh cricket just 15 years ago.
Mirpur is the symbol of modernity and that began with the number of Bangladesh victories in this venue, especially against higher-ranked opponents. It was here that they beat New Zealand 4-0 in 2010, where they reached the final of the 2012 Asia Cup, where they picked up ODI series wins over India, Pakistan and South Africa in 2015. Mirpur is the site of Test wins over England and Australia.
Here are some major facts in SBNCS
Zimbabwe played the first ODI in this venue back in December 8, 2006 and also the 100th on Wednesday against Sri Lanka. The highest score at SBNCS was India's 370 for 4 against Bangladesh during the ICC World Cup 2011 on February 19.
Sher-e- Bangla had hosted 2011 Cricket World Cup including four Bangladesh matches and two quarter-finals. They also co-hosted the 2014 World T20I.
Dashing opener Tamim Iqbal of Bangladesh scored his highest individual score making 132 runs against Pakistan on April 17, 2015. He is also the highest run scorer of this venue while Australian all-rounder Shane Watson scored the highest individual score of unbeaten 185-run against Bangladesh in this venue on April 11, 2011.
World number one all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has the most wicket taking record in this venue taking 106 wickets while Bangladesh's wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim had the most dismissal record with 81 which included 61 catches and 20 stumping.
