Mooney leads Australia's heist in last-ball thriller

September 25, 2021 00:00:00

Beth Mooney starred with a stunning century in the second ODI, as Australia pulled off a heist in a thriller to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 50-over series, reports Cricbuzz.

It was a game full of drama that India had in their hand until the final ball where Australia needed 3 to win. India thought they had Carey caught at square leg, but the third umpire intervened to adjudge it a waist-high no-ball, giving Australia an extra run too.

With two needed, Carey drove Jhulan Goswami to long on to scamper for a pair as celebrations erupted in the Australian camp. Chasing 275 on Friday , Australia's five-wicket win extended their unbeaten streak to 26 games, orchestrated by Mooney's unbeaten 133-ball 125.

India will feel hard done by, having come so close and not having been able to wrap up the game. They were slightly ahead in the game for most of Australia's chase with the required run rate constantly mounting. They had bowled good lines and kept things tight with Australia scoring just around the five-run-a-over mark.

They could've had Mooney's wicket in the penultimate over, but Jemimah Rodrigues spilled the chance at deep midwicket. It came down to Australia needing 13 in the final over and they desperately needed a boundary to be in a comfortable position, but neither Mooney nor Nicola Carey could find it. Yet, they held their nerve to eke out a win, finishing with a 97-run, undefeated alliance.
