Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Monday that experienced duo Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad will have to prove themselves to retain their place in the ODI set-up, according to Cricbuzz.
They endured woeful performances in the 2025 Champions Trophy - Mushfiqur scored 0 and 2 respectively against India and New Zealand while Mahmudullah, who missed the opening game due to injury, managed 4 runs against New Zealand. Bangladesh's last group-phase game against Pakistan was abandoned due to rain.
The two most senior players were expect to guide a relatively young side in the ICC event in UAE and Pakistan but their shot selection, especially in the match against New Zealand, came in for criticism.
Bangladesh's performance in the multi-team tournament was discussed during the 18th meeting of the BCB board of directors that was held at the BCB Management Office at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city on Monday.
Following the meeting, BCB's cricket operation chairman Nazmul Abedin was asked whether the pair will be in the plans for the next ODI World Cup in 2027.
"Very difficult question [whether they will be in the plans]. They have to prove themselves. Considering their age and performances, it's not my call actually but the selectors'. It wouldn't be right to comment, but it's not going to be very easy," Nazmul said. "Definitely they are our very experienced players with lots of contributions. Of course for any player, there comes a time when the end of a career happens. I feel that we will sit with both of them and hear their thoughts," he said.
