course begins
Handball referees course has begun on Friday at Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in the capital. Organised by Bangladesh Handball Referees Association (BHRA), a total of forty trainees from different district, division, Bangladesh Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Police and associations took part in the first phase of the course, which is being held in cooperation of Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF).The course will be held in two phases (forty trainees in each phase) with the second phase to start from January 17. Earlier, BHF general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor formally inaugurated the course as the chief guest. Bangladesh Handball Referees Association president Mohammad Nurul Islam presided over the inaugural ceremony. — BSS
Tennis team to participate in ITF
Asia Under-14 Championship
The ITF Asia Under-14 Development Championship will be held from January 11 to 24 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. Under-14 boys/girls players and captains from hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and Timor Leste will participate in the competition which will be held under the management of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association and with the approval of the International Tennis Federation. The competition will be held in two phases with Bangladesh tennis team to start their first phase competition from January 13-17 and the second phase to be held from January 19-23. The Bangladesh team will return home on January 24. — BSS
Osaka to play Australian Open
after 'devastating' injury pullout
MELBOURNE, Jan 10: Naomi Osaka declared Friday that she would "for sure" play her first-round match at the Australian Open after suffering an abdominal injury last week. The Japanese star reached her first final since 2022 last week in Auckland, only to retire injured after winning the first set against Denmark's Clara Tauson. "In that moment it was devastating," admitted two-time Australian Open champion Osaka, a former world number one. "It just sucked because I felt like my body wasn't keeping up with what my mind wanted it to do. "Obviously I was very concerned about my chances playing here," Osaka told reporters at Melbourne Park, where the first Grand Slam of the year begins on Sunday. — AFP

NETRAKONA, Jan 10 The final match and prize distribution ceremony of Mini Football Tournament, organised by Kendua upazila Chhatrashibir, was held at helipad ground of Kendua municipality on Friday. Chakpara XI emerged champions in the tournament while Turukpara XI finished runners-up. Upazila executive officer Imdadul Haque Talukder was the chief guest in the prize distribution ceremony presided by upazila Jamaat Ameer Sadekur Rahman and conducted by Municipal Jamaat Ameer Shafiqul Islam Shahjahan. Kendua police inspector (OC-investigation) Umar Qayoum, municipal BNP president Khokon Ahmed, its general secretary Moazzem Hossain Khan, district Chhatrashibir secretary Russell Ahmed and upazila Chhatrashibir president Abdullah Al Saimun, were among others, also present in the prize distribution
