Half masters marathon
contest held in Noakhali
NOAKHALI, Jan 31: The first-ever half marathon masters competition was held on Friday in Noakhali on occasion of Festival of Youth with the slogan of "Marathon run for good health." The marathon started from Sonapur zero point in the district town and terminated at Shaheed Bhulu Stadium after covering seven km distance, organised by Noakhali Cyber Warriors and Hello Noakhali under the supervision of district administration. Over 200 men and women of different ages participated in this marathon competition. Certificates and medals were given to all the participants in the Marathon Masters competition. Besides, the first ten winners were given certificates, medals and crests by the invited guests. The participants and organisers expected such an event in every year. —BSS

on trial over forced kiss
MADRID, Jan 31 (AFP): Spain's disgraced former football chief Luis Rubiales goes on trial on Monday over his forced kiss of star striker Jenni Hermoso that triggered global outrage. The affair has made Hermoso, 34, an icon of the fight against sexism in sport and generated soul-searching in Spain and beyond since erupting in 2023. Prosecutors have demanded two and a half years in prison for Rubiales, one year for sexual assault for the forced kiss and 18 months for coercing Hermoso to cover up the scandal.— AFP
Neymar confirms return
to his boyhood club
SAO PAULO, Jan 31: Neymar has confirmed he will sign what is expected to be a short-term contract with his boyhood club, Santos, as the Brazil striker aims to recharge his career ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The 32-year-old Neymar said Thursday that he's returning to the Sao Paulo club, and local media reported that the deal will extend only to June 30. "Only Santos can give me the love that I need to prepare for the challenges I have in the next few years. All of you, no matter who you support, know well what I am talking about," Neymar said on his social media channels. "I hope you all follow me in this new phase of my life." — AP
Women's basketball tournament today
Festival of Youth Women's Basketball tournament will be held today (Saturday) at Dhanmondi Sulatana Kamal Women's Sports Complex in the capital. Bangladesh Basketball Federation (BBF) president Dr. Shemim Aka Nawaz will inaugurate the day-long meet, which will be held on occasion of Festival of Youth. BBF general secretary major Mohammad Atiqul Hafiz (retd.) will present as the special guest in the opening ceremony, organised by Bangladesh Women's Sports Association. BWSA acting president Anjuman Ara Aksir will present in the closing ceremony of the tournament and distribute the prizes. — BSS
