Sana creates national record in archery

The Teer 9th National Archery Championship, organised by Bangladesh Archery Federation, began on Wednesday at the Archery Training Centre at Shaheed Ahsanullah Master Stadium in Tongi with famed archer Mohammad Rumman Sana making a national record in the men's singles of the recurve division, reports UNB.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Youth and Sports Ministry and local MP Zahid Ahsan Russell inaugurated the two-day meet. Executive Director of meet's sponsor City Group Shoeb Mohammad Asaduzzaman was also present on the occasion as a special guest.

The elimination rounds of the men's and women's singles of both the recurve and compound divisions began on the first day (Wednesday) on completion of the qualifying rounds.

Rumman Sana of Bangladesh Ansar reached the quarterfinal of the men's singles of the recurve division with national mark scoring 654 to improve his previous record of 652.

In the men's singles quarterfinals on Thursday, Rumman Sana will face Prodipta Chakma, Hakim Ahmed Rubel will meet Ibrahim Rezwan, Sheikh Sajib will encounter Sanwar Hossain while Tamimmul Islam will play Abdullah Al Mamun.

The women's singles of the combined division also advanced to the quarterfinals on the opening day.

Quarterfinal matches are: Roxana Akhter vs Mahmuda Akhter, Suma Biswas vs Bipasha Akhter, Bonnya Akhter vs Kanij Fatema, and Susmita Bonik vs Sheuly Akhter.

Youth and Sports Secretary M Asadul Haque will be the chief guest at the closing function on Thursday afternoon.

A total of 142 archers from 32 teams are competing in the men's singles, men's team, women's singles, women's team and mixed doubles events of both the recurve and compound divisions for 10 gold medals.

The champions, runners-up and 3rd ranked team will be awarded with trophies.
