Shooter Shakil clinches 2nd silver

Bangladeshi promising shooter Shakil Ahmed clinched the second silver medal for Bangladesh in Men's 50-meter Pistol in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games at Belmont Shooting Centre at Gold Coast in Australia on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The 22-year old Army shooter from Khulna, Shakil came to the limelight by winning his first-ever gold medal in the 12th South Asian Games in the same event held in the Indian city of Ghuahati in 2016.

Country's famed shooter Abdullah Hel Baki clinched first silver medal, the only medal for Bangladesh in the country's favorite Men's 10m Air Rifle of the 21st Commonwealth Games at the same venue last Sunday. Baki also won silver medal for Bangladesh in the previous 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Country's celebrated shooter and Olympian Asif Hossain Khan won the first-ever gold medal for Bangladesh in the same event at Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002 and he continued his brilliant show in the next regional games by winning the gold medal in 2004 SAF Games.

In the day's 50-meter Pistol, Shakil managed eight-man final round berth finishing 4th among 21 competitors in the qualification round scoring 545-10x and made a brilliant came back in the final shoot-off to clinch the 2nd silver medal for the country scoring 220.5.

Australian shooter Daniel Repacholi earned the event's gold scoring 227.2 with games record while Indian shooter Om Mitharval took the bronze scoring 201.1.

In the event's qualification round, Om Mitharval of India topped the list to qualify for final shoot-off scoring 549-6x, followed by Bin Gai of Singapore scoring 546-8x and Daniel Repacholi of hosts Australia with a score of 546-7x.

Earlier in the men's 10-meter air pistol on last Monday, Shakil Ahmed managed a final round berth as the 8th and last man scoring 563-14x in the qualification round and was placed 6th in the final shoot-off scoring 150.1 at the same venue.
