Sports promote discipline, keep youths away from drugs: KDA chair

KHULNA, Aug 01 (BSS): Chairman of Khulna Development Authority (KDA) Advocate S.M. Shafikul Alam Mona said on Saturday that there is no alternative to sports in protecting young people from drugs, juvenile gangs, and various social crimes.

"Sports are a source of healthy recreation, reflecting discipline, unity, and teamwork. Football teaches leadership, instant decision-making, loyalty, and mutual respect," he said while inaugurating the final of the 32-team Zia Memorial Mini-Bar Football Tournament at Balur Math in the city's Ward No. 21 on Friday afternoon.

The tournament was organised by Young Star Boys Club.

Mona, also president of Khulna city BNP, said regular sports activities help keep young people disciplined, physically fit, and mentally healthy at a time when excessive screen time has become a growing concern.

He said the KDA is committed not only to developing urban infrastructure but also to ensuring a healthy environment, adequate playgrounds, and a vibrant city where the younger generation can grow up in a healthy atmosphere.

After the programme, Mona joined a prayer gathering at Mariam Jame Mosque on Dilkhola Road in Ward No. 30 and later inspected the construction work of Sritalabari Temple.
