Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Sunday after securing a convincing victory in the board directors' election held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, reports BSS.
Tamim, who had been serving as the head of the BCB's ad hoc committee for the past two months, first won a director's position from the Dhaka clubs category by receiving the highest number of votes in the election. He was subsequently elected BCB president unopposed as the sole candidate for the post.
With his appointment, Tamim becomes the 18th president and the sixth elected president in the history of the BCB. Fahim Sinha was named vice-president.
A total of 16 candidates contested the election in Category-2, representing Dhaka-based clubs, with 12 candidates elected as directors. Tamim topped the poll with 73 votes, followed by Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed and Israfil Khasru with 72 votes each. Masuduzzaman secured 70 votes, while Yasir Mohammad Faisal Ashiq received 68.
The other successful candidates from the category were Fahim Sinha, Asif Rabbani, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Rafiqul Islam Babu, Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed Shamim, Shahnian Tanim and Shafiq Ahmed Salam.
The unsuccessful candidates were Borhanul Pappu, Amjad Hossain, Fayazur Rahman Mitu and Major Imroz Ahmed (retd).
The newly formed 25-member BCB board comprises 10 representatives from the divisional and district cricket associations (Category-1), 12 Dhaka club representatives (Category-2), and one representative from Category-3.
Meanwhile, most of the directors from the Categroy-1, which represents divisional and district association, were elected unopposed in Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) poll today held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The voting began at 10 AM and continued until 4 PM, with the results announced in the evening.
The first ballot was cast 35 minutes after voting officially opened. The election process remained largely peaceful and uneventful throughout the day.
Competition was limited in the divisional and district associations category, where several directors had already been elected unopposed.
In the Category-1 election, Khulna Division saw the only contest involving three candidates. Shantanu Islam Sumit and Shafiqul Alam Tuhin emerged victorious to secure the two available director positions. In Barishal
Division, Mizanur Rahman won the lone director's seat in a two-way contest.
Earlier, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury of the Sylhet Divisional Sports Organisation,
Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto of the Bogura District Sports Organisation and Mirza Faisal Amin of the Thakurgaon District Sports Organisation had already been elected unopposed.
