Tamim makes a poor return to competitive cricket after 7 months

December 12, 2024 00:00:00

Opener Tamim Iqbal's return to competitive cricket after seven months was not remarkable one as the southpaw could score just 11 runs for his side Chattogram in their opening game of the NCL T20 against Rangpur at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet on Wednesday, reports BSS.

He though hit one four and one six in 10 balls. Chattogram eventually were restricted to 132-9 before Rangpur overhauled the target in 16.5 overs for a five-wicket victory.

Tamim last played any competitive game on May 6 in Dhaka Premier League at Fatullah Stadium in Narayanganj. Since then he was out of cricket. But as he prepares to lead the Fortune Barishal defend the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) title, he chose to play this tournament.

Beforehand, he passed the fitness test conducted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Fast bowler Mukidul Islam Mugdho claimed 3-17 as Rangpur Division secured a five-wicket win over Chattogram.

Meanwhile, despite a blitzkrieg knock from opener Habibur Rahman Sohan, Rajshahi suffered an 11 runs defeat to Khulna Division on DLS method in their first match of the NCL T20 at Sylhet Academy ground on Wednesday.

Khulna put on 172-7 after being sent to bat first with Under-19 captain Azizul Hakim Tamim carrying his Asia Cup form to the NCL by blasting 31 ball-53 with three fours and four sixes.

In another match, captain Naim Sheikh led from the front as Dhaka Metro got off to a winning start to the NCL T20 with a 31-run victory over Barishal Division at the Sylhet Academy Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

Naim Sheikh lifted Metro to 192-4, hitting 65 off 35 with five fours and four sixes. He and his opening partner Imranuzzman set the platform upfront with 119 runs in just 11 overs.

Meanwhile, opener Jishan Alam smashed a blistering century, but that was not enough to resist his side, Sylhet, from a six-wicket defeat to Dhaka Division in the first-round match of the NCL T20 at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Jishan struck 100 off just 52 balls with four fours and 10 sixes, the second highest sixes for a Bangladesh player in recognized T20 cricket after Tamim Iqbal and Najmul Hossain Shanto, who both hit 11 sixes in a century-plus innings as Sylhet racked up 205-4.

While Ariful missed the century, he set a good platform for the side. Using that platform, Mahidul Islam Ankan and Shuvagata Hom shared an unbeaten 63 runs off just 37 balls to help the ease past the target.

Shuvagata was not out on 31 from 18 balls while Ankan played 23 balls for his unbeaten 30.
