Dhaka stocks shunt higher

The Dhaka bourse Monday ticked marginally higher and featured a turnover of above Tk 11 billion amid investors' enthusiastic participation.

On the day, the major sectors including bank, engineering and pharmaceuticals & chemicals witnessed correction as investors opted to book profits from these sectors.

The shares of market movers such as Grameenphone, Lafarge Surma Cement and British American Tobacco Bangladesh Companies lost prices between 1.04 per cent and 5.80 per cent.

The market started the session on a positive note and the DSE broad index DSEX continued its upward trend for more than half an hour.

After meandering up and down through the day, the DSEX closed the session with a marginal rise of 0.19 per cent or 12.17 points to close at 6319.12.

The shariah based index DSES closed at 1392.73 points with a rise of 0.68 per cent or 9.45 points, while and the blue chip index DS30 lost 0.18 per cent or 4.23 points to close at 2286.11.

Of total number of issues traded, 127 advanced, 161 drifted lower and 36 were unchanged.

The turnover stood at above Tk 11.58 billion which was 19.33 per cent higher than the turnover of the previous session.

After three sessions, the DSE turnover crossed Tk 11 billion-mark.

Of the major sectors based on market capitalisation, telecommunication declined 1.5 per cent followed by fuel & power 0.3 per cent, bank 0.1 per cent, engineering 0.1 per cent and textile 0.1 per cent.

Of the gaining sectors, financial institutions advanced 0.8 per cent, pharmaceuticals & chemicals 1.3 per cent and jute 1.3 per cent.

Of other sectors, bank captured 37.5 per cent of the market turnover as banking issues attracted the investors.

The financial institutions sector also observed increased participation compared to previous session. The sector snared 18.8 per cent of the market turnover.

The banks and financial institutions dominated the scrip-wise turnover chart on the premier bourse DSE.

AB Bank topped the turnover chart with a value of Tk 857 million followed by LankaBangla Finance Tk 736 million, Dhaka Bank Tk 512 million and Square Pharmaceuticals Tk 492 million.

Mithun Knitting and Dyeing was the number one gainer with a rise of 9.96 per cent to close at Tk 29.80, while Pacific Denims was the worst loser after declining 12.38 per cent to close at Tk 19.10.

All indices on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) posted marginal rise amid mixed performance displayed by major sector.

The benchmark index CASPI closed at 19548 points with a rise of 10 points.

Of 253 issues traded, 108 advanced, 120 declined and 25 were unchanged and the turnover stood at above Tk 689.85 million on the port city bourse CSE.
