The largest market cap listed company -- Grameenphone (GP) -- dominated the Dhaka bourse's transaction chart Monday while top 10 traded companies accounted for 34 per cent of the total turnover.
Brokers said investors were mostly active on Grameenphone and Alif Manufacturing Company's shares throughout the session amid optimism.
"The investors showed higher enthusiasm surrounding the Alif Manufacturing Company amid short-term speculation following the name change news," said an analyst at a leading brokerage firm.
CMC Kamal Textile started its journey with a new name -- Alif Manufacturing Company -- from Monday. The company also created hype among the investors on Thursday last and dominated the Dhaka bourse's transaction chart.
Earlier, Alif Group, which is engaged in tobacco, real estate, brick manufacturing and poly fibre businesses, bought the company's entire shares of the much-talked-about CMC Kamal Textile Mills from Ruling Awami League lawmaker AHM Mustafa Kamal.
According to statistics available with the DSE, about 606,454 shares of GP were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 284 million, which was 6.23 per cent of the premier bourse's total transaction.
Recently, the Board of Directors of GP recommended interim cash dividend for the year 2017 at the rate of 105 per cent of the paid up capital of the company which represents 98 per cent of the profit after tax for the half year ended on June 30, 2017.
The company also posted a 7.95 per cent growth in earnings per share (EPS) in third quarter (Q3) for July-September, 2017 period. EPS was 5.16 in for July-September, 2017 as against Tk 4.78 for July-September, 2016.
In nine months, for January-September, 2017, EPS was Tk 15.88 as against Tk 12.70 for January-September, 2016.
Alif Manufacturing Company followed next, with shares of Tk 254 million changing hands. The company's share price closed at Tk 27.10 each.
Meanwhile, top 10 traded companies captured nearly 34 per cent transaction of the premier bourse's total turnover.
Shahjalal Islami Bank notched the third spot, with shares of Tk 249 million changing hands. The bank's share price rose 4.33 per cent to close at Tk 33.70 each.
Square Pharmaceuticals emerged as fourth with shares of Tk 191 million changing hands. The second largest market cap company's share price closed at Tk 301 each, shedding 0.07 per cent over the previous session.
The turnover of National Tubes was Tk 126 million. The state-run company's share price jumped 5.68 per cent to close at Tk 130.30 each. It was the also the day's highest gainer.
City Bank featured a turnover of Tk 110 million. The bank's share price advanced 1.32 per cent to close at Tk 53.70 each.
The turnover of Islami Bank Bangladesh was Tk 99 million. The bank's share price gained 1.76 per cent to close at Tk 34.60 each.
Aamra Networks featured a turnover of Tk 74 million. The company's share price closed at Tk 96.70 each, advancing 1.79 per cent over the previous day.
The turnover of Brac Bank was Tk 71 million. The bank's share price rose 1.51 per cent to close at Tk 107.50 each.
LankaBangla Finance was also included in the top 10 turnover list with shares of Tk 70 million changing hands. The company's share price fell 0.40 per cent to close at Tk 49.80 each.
