A total of 163 students Saturday received 'Mercantile Bank Abdul Jalil Education Scholarship', introduced by Mercantile Bank Limited.
Governor of Bangladesh Bank Fazle Kabir distributed the scholarship cheques and certificates among the recipients of Dhaka division at a ceremony, held at a city hotel.
Chairman of Mercantile Bank Limited (MBL) AKM Shaheed Reza attended the ceremony as a special guest, while the chairman of Mercantile Bank Foundation Shahidul Ahsan presided over.
The MBL's Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kazi Masihur Rahman, its executive committee chairman Md. Anwarul Haque, audit committee chairman Dr. Mahmood Osman Imam, risk management committee chairman M. Amanullah, its directors, shareholders and officials attended the ceremony, among others.
Speaking on the occasion, the BB Governor said the highest amount of fund should be invested in education sector aiming to take the country forward through creating skilled HR.
"The private sector should extend their support in this regard, because the government cannot alone do this job with a limited fund reserve," he said.
The BB governor thanked the Mercantile Bank authority for its support to the students under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.
Congratulating the scholarship recipients, he said: You should uphold the honour bestowed upon you by Mercantile Bank Ltd through your sincere efforts for the country's development.
Mr Kabir suggested them to gather knowledge beyond textbooks.
"Many of the students don't go through newspapers, they are not updated about local and global affairs," he regretted.
Admiring the resilience of general people of the country, the BB governor said floods in several parts of the country in recent times and influx of Rohingya people in Cox's Bazar are two of the recent challenges.
"Helping the Rohingya refugees is a responsibility for all in the country," he said.
Thanking the banks and financial institutions who contributed a lot to help Rohingya refugees, the central bank governor asked the Mercantile Bank to consider whether it can extend its support the Myanmar refugees under its CSR fund.
He also underscored the importance of banking sector for the country's economy.
The MBL Chairman Shaheed Reza said the bank operates not only for profit but also for the development of country's people.
The bank is distributing scholarship among meritorious and poor students since 2010. The scholarship has been named after its founding chairman Abdul Jalil.
Each of the selected students of JSC, SSC and HSC received Tk 15,000, Tk 18,000 and 19,000 respectively under the scholarship programme for once.
So far a total of 1102 students received the scholarship worth Tk 16 million this year for their outstanding results in school and college examinations.
