Stocks continue its plunge, dragged by blue chips

FE REPORT | January 09, 2025 00:00:00

The Dhaka bourse closed Wednesday's session marginally lower, extending its losing streak for the second consecutive session.

The DSEX, broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), declined in the last four sessions out of five as investors failed to see any strong recovery stance.

The market opened Wednesday's session positively. Soon, the DSEX started to exhibit ups and downs amid low investor participation. At the end of the session, the broad index closed at 5,185 points, with a loss of 5.77 points.

The erosion experienced by blue chip stocks played a major role in the index fall.

The blue chip stocks that fell include British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company, BRAC Bank, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Islami Bank, and Square Pharmaceuticals.

The DS30 index comprising blue chip stocks dropped 1.74 points on Wednesday to close at 1,921 points.

Of the 396 issues traded, 118 advanced, 214 declined and 64 were unchanged on the trading floor.

The DSE posted a turnover of Tk 3.07 billion, 28 per cent less than the previous session.

EBL Securities in a market review said the Dhaka bourse has been experiencing subdued trading activity as most investors remained reluctant to participate in the market amidst apprehension over its waning momentum in the absence of any major trigger.

Except for Tuesday, the turnover value on the DSE remained below Tk 4 billion in the last three weeks.

Investors' participation on Wednesday was mostly concentrated on the banking sector that grabbed 19.3 per cent of the market turnover, followed by pharmaceuticals & chemical sector, engineering and textile sectors.

Fine Foods was the number one traded stock, with a turnover value of Tk 129 million, followed by Asiatic Laboratories, Agni Systems, and Midland Bank.

Associated Oxygen experienced the highest appreciation of 8.19 per cent to close at Tk 18.50 per share.

On the other hand, Dulamia Cotton Spinning Mills was the day's worst loser, having shed 7 per cent to Tk 73.10 per share.
