FE Report | January 22, 2018 00:00:00

Stocks witnessed marginal gain for the second consecutive sessions Sunday. Trading activities remained low as investors mostly followed cautious stance ahead of monetary policy announcement.

Dealers said although the market ended on positive note, many investors followed "wait-and-see" strategy ahead of monetary policy statement (MPS) and earnings declarations of listed companies.

"Upcoming monetary policy statement coupled with ongoing earnings decorations of listed companies kept many investors watchful, keeping turnover below Tk 4.0 billion-mark," said an analyst at a leading brokerage firm.

The market opened on positive note and key index of the major bourse gained more than 34 points within first hour of trading, but rest of the session saw some sale pressure. Finally it ended nearly 25 points higher.

DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 6,147, advancing 24.96 points or 0.41 per cent over the previous day.

According to EBL Securities, the investors opted for rebalancing their portfolio amid shaky movement of the index.

The stockbroker noted that optimistic investors showed their buying binge on telecommunication, pharmaceuticals and engineering sectors issues.

The two other indices also ended higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, soared 19.46 points or 0.86 per cent to finish 2,260. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) also gained 6.09 points or 0.43 per cent to settle 1,410.

The market activities, however, remained below Tk 4.0 billion-mark and the total turnover declined to Tk 3.44 billion, which was 4.18 per cent lower than the previous day's turnover of Tk 3.59 billion.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended higher with CSE All Share Price Index - CAPSI - advancing nearly 86 points to finish 18,954.

The Selective Categories Index - CSCX - also gained 50 points to settle at 11,441.

Gainers beat losers as 113 issues closed higher, 80 ended lower and 42 issues remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 6.86 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 176 million in turnover.
