Ten cos clinch 27pc turnover of DSE

Four banks among the top traded stocks

Top ten traded companies captured more than 27 per cent transaction of the Dhaka bourse on Monday with four banks among the top ten most traded stocks.

Market insiders said the banking sector attracted the investors most as they find an alternative to low-cap stocks and junks, which were facing a new regulatory squeeze because of abnormal price hikes.

The banking sector grabbed about 29 per cent transaction of the day's total turnover.

The total turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk 4.45 billion, which was Tk 5.60 billion on the previous day.

To create a balance in investments, investors were pouring money in banks, which remained 'undervalued' for around six months, said a leading broker.

Meanwhile, the banking sector declined more than 28 per cent and lost Tk 207.30 billion in market capitalisation in the current year, according to the statistics from IDLC Securities.

The most active shares in terms of value included LankaBangla Finance, BBS Cables, City Bank, National Housing Finance, Dhaka Bank, Brac Bank, United Power, Mercantile Bank, Shepherd Industries and Saiham Textile.

According to statistics available with the DSE, about 6.23 million shares of LankaBangla were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 184 million, which was 4.13 per cent of the DSE's total turnover.

The shares of LankaBangla Finance were traded between Tk 28.80 and Tk 30.20 each, before closing at Tk 30, advancing 1.01 per cent over the previous day.

BBS Cables followed next, with shares worth Tk 145 million changing hands. The company's share price rose 4.90 per cent to close at Tk 117.70 each.

The City Bank notched the third spot, with shares worth nearly Tk 135 million changing hands. The bank's share price closed at Tk 35.70 each, rising 1.71 per cent over the day before.

National Housing Finance emerged fourth with shares worth Tk 134 million changing hands. The company's share price jumped 7.84 per cent to close at Tk 56.40 each.

The turnover of Dhaka Bank was Tk 133 million. The bank's share closed at Tk 17 each, losing 0.58 per cent over the previous day.

Brac Bank featured a turnover of Tk 113 million. Its share price advanced 0.52 per cent to close at Tk 77.30 each.

The turnover of United Power was Tk 110 million. The power generation company's share price closed at Tk 330.80 each, gaining 1.38 per cent.

Mercantile Bank featured a turnover of Tk 90 million. The bank's share price fell 0.49 per cent to close at Tk 20.40 each.

The turnover of Shepherd Industries was Tk 78 million. The company's share price closed at Tk 34.30 each, soaring 8.54 per cent. It was also the day's second highest gainer.

Saiham Textile was also included in the top ten turnover chart with shares of Tk 72 million changing hands. The company's share price rose 8.12 per cent to close at Tk 30.60 each. It was the day's third highest gainer.
