Shipping Corporation tops the weekly turnover chart

Ten most-traded stocks accounted for nearly 31 per cent of turnover in the outgoing week on the Dhaka Stock Exchange while Bangladesh Shipping Corporation made its way to the top of the list.

Market operators said the state-run shipping corporation dominated the weekly turnover list amid an influx of buyers and sellers riding on its second quarter earnings results.

According to statistics available with the DSE, some 30.24 million shares of the BSC were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 4.31 billion, which was 6.52 per cent of the week's total turnover.

The shipping corporation's share price rose 4.67 per cent during the week and closed at Tk 141.10 on Thursday, the last trading day of the week. Its share price traded between Tk 38.50 and Tk 155.90 in the last one year.

However, its share price dropped 1.60 per cent on Thursday, after rising 'abnormally' in the recent weeks.

In the past two months, the state-run listed entity's share price jumped over 190 per cent or Tk 93 each.

The shipping corporation posted an impressive growth in its profit for July-December 2021 (H1), compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

In a filing with DSE on Thursday, the company reported its earnings per share (EPS) at Tk 8.28 for July-December 2021, up by a whopping 399 per cent, as against Tk 1.66 in the corresponding period.

The profit grew to Tk 1.26 billion, the highest profit compared to the first half of any financial year since the inception of the corporation. It has also surpassed the nearly Tk 720 million annual profit for the fiscal year (FY) 2020-21.

Listed in 1977, the state-run company declared a 12 per cent cash dividend for the year ended on June 30, 2021.

Beximco came in second on the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 3.36 billion changing hands during the week. The company's share shed 2.58 per cent to close at Tk 147.20 each on Thursday.

British American Tobacco Bangladesh clinched the third spot, with shares worth Tk 2.16 billion changing hands. The company's share closed at Tk 627.50, losing 3.58 per cent.

Orion Pharma emerged as the fourth, with shares worth Tk 2.11 billion changing hands. The company's share price rose 9.05 per cent to close at Tk 113.30 each.

Fortune Shoes notched the fifth spot, with shares worth Tk 1.98 billion changing hands. The shoe maker's share closed at Tk 121.30, gaining 3.50 per cent over the week before.

The turnover of Saif Powertec was Tk 1.52 billion. The company's share price advanced 3.69 per cent to close at Tk 45 each.

Acme Laboratories featured a turnover of Tk 1.39 billion. The company's share closed at Tk 103.10, gaining 8.99 per cent.

The turnover of Bangladesh Building Systems was Tk 1.20 billion. The company's share plunged 11.26 per cent to close at Tk 26.80 each.

Bay Leasing & Investment featured a turnover of Tk 1.18 billion. The company's share closed at Tk 35.40, rising 10.97 per cent.
