The Bangladesh Seed Association (BSA) organised a heartfelt memorial event to celebrate the life and contributions of Simon Nanne Groot, the visionary founder of East-West Seed and the distinguished 2019 World Food Prize laureate, on Tuesday.
The event, held at the BSA's office at Unique Heights in Dhaka, brought together prominent figures from the seed industry to pay tribute to Groot's enduring legacy in agriculture and food security, according to a press statement.
The memorial was conducted by BSA Secretary Dr. Ali Afzal, who welcomed attendees and reflected on Groot's transformative impact on the global seed sector.
Mostafa Kamal, Country Manager of East-West Seed Bangladesh, shared insights into Groot's remarkable journey -- from establishing East-West Seed to pioneering innovations in tropical vegetable breeding, empowering smallholder farmers, and enhancing food production across Asia and beyond.
Guests including Mohammad Masum, Chairman of Supreme Seeds; Md. Abu Taher, Proprietor of United Seed; Sayed Sadeque Mohammad Ali, Managing Director of 3S Agro Services Ltd.; and Zahidul Islam, Managing Director of Bayer Crop Science Ltd; shared personal anecdotes about their interactions with Groot.
