Uttara Bank tops DSE transaction chart

Ten cos grab 31pc turnover

The top 10 traded companies, including seven banks, grabbed more than 31 per cent of transactions on the country's premier bourse on Thursday, with Uttara Bank making its way to the top of the chart.

The total turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk 10.58 billion, nearly 20 per cent higher than the previous day's value of Tk 8.84 billion.

The top 10 active shares in terms of value included Uttara Bank, Exim Bank, UCB, LankaBangla Finance, Islami Bank, Aamra Networks, Premier Bank, Mercantile Bank, Trust Bank and BBS Cables.

Of them, share prices of six companies gained up to 8.18 per cent, two faced marginal corrections while two remained unchanged.

According to statistics available with the DSE, about 12.22 million shares of Uttara Bank were traded, generating a turnover of Tk 480 million, making up 4.34 per cent of the premier bourse's total turnover.

The bank's share price hovered between Tk 37.40 and Tk 40.90 before settling 5.88 per cent higher at Tk 39.60.

Listed in 1984, Uttara Bank disbursed 20 per cent cash dividend for the year ending on December 31, 2016. In 2015, the bank also gave 20 per cent cash dividend.

The bank's paid-up capital is Tk 4.0 billion and authorised capital is Tk 6.0 billion while total number of securities is 400.08 million.

The sponsor-directors own 12.58 per cent stake in the bank, while institutional investors own 24.86 per cent, foreign investors 2.22 per cent and the general public own 60.34 per cent as on August 31, 2017, according to the DSE data.

Exim Bank secured the second spot on the chart, with shares of Tk 385 million changing hands. It was 3.64 per cent of the day's total transactions. The bank's share price remained flat at Tk 19 each.

UCB notched the third spot, with shares of Tk 336 million changing hands, accounting for 3.17 per cent of the total turnover. The bank's share price closed at Tk 25.50 each, advancing 4.50 per cent.

LankaBangla became the fourth, with shares of Tk 335 million changing hands, grabbing 3.16 per cent of the day's total turnover. The company's share price fell 1.72 per cent to close at Tk 62.90 each.

The turnover of Islami Bank was Tk 321 million, capturing 3.03 per cent of the day's total transactions. The bank's share price closed at Tk 37.40, gaining 3.60 per cent.

The newly listed Aamra Networks featured a turnover of Tk 311 million, which was 2.94 per cent of the day's total turnover. The company's share advanced 1.47 per cent to settle at Tk 144.50 each.

The turnover of Premier Bank was Tk 286 million, grabbing 2.70 per cent of the day's total turnover. The bank's share price closed at Tk 18.30, remaining unchanged over the previous day.

Mercantile Bank featured a turnover of Tk 273 million, which was 2.58 per cent of the day's total transaction. The bank's share price closed at Tk 29, advancing 2.47 per cent.

The turnover of Trust Bank was Tk 269 million, capturing 2.54 per cent of the day's total turnover. The bank's share price closed at Tk 42.30, soaring 8.18 per cent.

BBS Cables was also included in the top ten turnover chart, with shares of Tk 252 million changing hands. The company's share price closed at Tk 135.40, shedding 0.07 per cent.
