Commerce adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has called for businesses to prepare themselves for Bangladesh's upcoming graduation from its least-developed country (LDC) status in 2026.
He also urged all stakeholders concerned to work together to lower operating costs, emphasising the need for a more business-friendly environment.
"The future of our industry must be sustainable, but we continue to face high operational costs and bureaucratic challenges," said the adviser.
He made the observations at an event styled 'Shaping Bangladesh: Designing Tomorrow, Building Today' hosted by Ceramic Bangladesh, a magazine published by the Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA), at a city hotel on Thursday night.
Amir Ahmed, associate professor and head of the Department of Real Estate at Daffodil International University, moderated the first panel session 'Innovation for a Sustainable Future: Exploring Material Innovations & Sustainability'.
The discussion focused on latest advancements in sustainable building materials, innovative construction techniques and their role in reducing environmental impacts.
Panellists highlighted the importance of adopting eco-friendly alternatives, enhancing energy efficiency and integrating circular economy principles in the real estate and construction sectors.
The second session styled 'Building a Greener Future: The Role of Sustainability in Architecture' was moderated by architect Zannat Jui, associate principal architect at Shatotto - Architecture for Green Living.
It explored how sustainable design principles could shape the future of architecture, ensuring resilience against climate change while promoting energy efficiency and environmental harmony.
Panellists shared insights on green building certifications, passive design strategies, and the increasing role of technology in sustainable urban planning.
BCMEA acting president Moynul Islam presided over the programme.
BCMEA general secretary Irfan Uddin also spoke at the event, emphasising the industry's commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.
