BTRC cancels 41 A2P SMS aggregators' licences

FE REPORT | January 30, 2025 00:00:00

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has revoked the licences of 41 Application-to-Person (A2P) SMS aggregators for failing to renew their certifications on time and continuing commercial operations after their licences expired.

The regulatory body in a public notification issued on Wednesday warned that any activity under the cancelled licences will be deemed illegal and punishable under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Act 2001.

It also directed the affected companies to surrender their licences and clear the dues, if any, within 30 days.

In another circular on the same day, BTRC invited new applications for the SMS aggregator licence.

A2P SMS aggregators serve as intermediaries between businesses and mobile phone operators, enabling bulk messaging for promotional campaigns, customer notifications, and authentication services.

Over the years, BTRC has strengthened its oversight of this sector to ensure compliance with legal and operational standards.

In previous regulatory actions, the commission cancelled the licences of several internet service providers and cybercafés for similar violations.

The latest crackdown reflects BTRC's commitment to maintaining order in the telecommunications industry.

By enforcing strict regulations, the commission aims to protect consumer interests and ensure that service providers operate within the legal framework.
