Deep Sea Port to increase container handling of Ctg port to 6m TEUs

CHATTOGRAM Apr 04: Bangladesh is moving forward with the long-planned Deep Sea Port at Matarbari on Maheshkhali Island, presenting it as the first pillar of a broader Maheshkhali-Matarbari integrated development zone.
The container handling capacity of Chittagong sea Port will increase to 6 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in 2030 next with the completion of Matarbari Deep Sea Port as Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is implementing the project now.
Omar Faruk, Director of CPA, said container handling capacity of Chittagong Port will increase to 6 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in 2030 next with the completion of Matarbari Deep sea port and Bay Terminal. Existing container handling capacity of CPA is 3.2 million TEUs, Capacity of Matarbari Deep sea port will be 2.8 million TEUs."
CPA officials also said that the construction work of the Matarbari Deep sea port will begin this year.
Meanwhile, a contract was signed by the Chairman of CPA Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman and Tomokazu Hasegawa, the General Manager (GM) of Penta Ocean Construction Company Limited recently.
The contract has been signed with a joint venture of Penta-Ocean Construction for work of 65 per cent and TOA Corporation for 35 percent works of the Matarbari Port Development Project Phase 1 - Package 1: Procurement of Civil Works for Port Construction. It is scheduled for completion in 42 months.
