COX'S BAZAR, Mar 14 (UNB): Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has enquired about the progress of the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Rehabilitation Project, including the allocation process and transparency in beneficiary selection.
He emphasised the need for a transparent listing process, proper distribution of responsibilities, and accountability.
On Friday, the Chief Adviser visited the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Rehabilitation Project in Cox's Bazar to assess its progress. Project Director Lt. Colonel Mirajul Islam briefed him on the project's developments.
The Chief Adviser said, "It must be ensured that those who are supposed to be rehabilitated are actually moving into the houses. We need to carefully monitor whether anyone else is occupying them unlawfully, bypassing regulations. Constructing buildings is just a matter of funding, but if we fail to achieve the intended purpose, the entire effort becomes meaningless."
Officials also informed the Chief Adviser that a portion of the project's land has been under Beximco Group's possession since 2017. A court ruling on this matter is expected in the coming days.
The Chief Adviser said, "For a long time, rampant corruption has taken place. Those who were supposed to benefit were deprived, while certain preferred individuals were given access. Financial transactions were also involved. But those who had rightful claims did not receive their due."
"This mistake cannot be repeated. The process must be transparent to prevent any form of corruption.
