BOGRA, Sept 16: Farmers of 162 villages of 36 unions under eight upazilas of Bogra district are trying hard to recoup crops loss worth Tk 1030 million caused by recent floods as the area remained submerged for around fifteen days.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has assessed the loss which is causing acute sufferings to the poor and marginal farmers who are very much worried over their ability to recoup the loss.

DAE sources said farmers cultivated T-Aman paddy on 185,291 hectares of land in twelve upazilas of the district. The back-to-back floods inundated 162 villages of 36 unions under twelve upazilas of the district and submerged 41,105 hectares of crop fields. Of those, some 11,085 hectares of croplands have been damaged, the sources added.

Aassistant agriculture officer of Adamdughi upazila Shah Alam said, "The farmers of Sonatola, Shariakandi, Dhunat, Sherpur, Gabtoli, Shajahanpur, Shibganj and Adamdighi upazilas have been badly affected this season. To recover their loss, we are telling them to cultivate paddy saplings of different varieties after the floodwater recedes."

"We've advised them to cultivate vegetables, mustard, pulse and ground nut if the water takes longer time to recede," he added.

Hilman Ali (39), a farmer of Raktodah village under Muroil union of Adamdighi upazila, said, "I cultivated T-Aman paddy on 7 bighas of land before this flood. The whole paddy field has been damaged by floodwater. There is no scope of cultivating paddy again as the land is still under water."
