CHATTOGRAM, June 28: Adviser of the Ministry of Industries Adilur Rahman Khan said that the government will take steps for modernisation of Karnaphuli Paper Mill (KPM) and set up new mills to produce paper.

He made the remarks during a visit to the KPM, a state-owned paper mill. Later in the afternoon, he exchanged views with the management of the mill at the hall room of the KPM.

Addressing the meeting, he said, "Karnaphuli Paper Mill is currently dilapidated due to its age. It is certainly commendable that the management have kept KPM's production running even if it is in a state of disrepair. In this situation, we have to think about setting up a new factory here while keeping KPM operational.

"Karnaphuli Paper Mill has been serving the nation by producing high-quality papers for the last 77 years. The officials, staff and workers of the Karnaphuli Paper Mill have kept the mill operational until now."

Mr Khan said, "The advisory council is aware of the state of KPM. The KPM management has already given a proposal to set up six factories in Chandraghona. We think that that proposal needs to be reviewed further." He also said that the government's efforts will go on so that KPM can continue to produce paper for a longer period of time and contribute to the needs of the country and the nation.

Among others, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Obaidur Rahman, Chairman of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation Md. Fazlur Rahman, Managing Director of KPM Md. Shahid Ullah, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. SM Farhad Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Kaptai Md. Ruhul Amin, KPM General Manager (Commercial) Abdullah Al Mamun, General Manager (Production) Md. Moidul Islam, General Manager (Administration) Abdullah Al Mahmud and KPM CBA President Md. Abdul Razzak were present at the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Md. Shahid Ullah said there is sufficient vacant land in Chandraghona. "Proposals had been made earlier to utilize that land and meet the demand for paper. At present, there is a need to review the previously given proposals," said Mr Ullah.
