More land for veg in Pabna

PABNA, Sept 16: The farmers of nine upazilas in Pabna district have brought more land under off-season and winter vegetable cultivation this year than that of the last year.

A source at the agriculture office here said last year winter vegetables were cultivated on more than 23,000 hectares of land in the nine upazilas of Pabna; but this year some 29,000 hectares of land are brought under vegetable cultivation.

According to the agriculture department sources, during the winter season on an average five to 10 trucks of vegetables are supplied everyday to the various districts of the country from Pabna.

Different kinds of off-season and winter vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, carrot, bean, radish, snake gourd, tomato, lady's finger, gourd and papya are being cultivated.

Farmer Shahjahan Ali of Silimpur in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna said he has cultivated brinjal, papya and 'lal shak' on 25 bighas of land and sold 270 maunds of the produce until now.

He has so far posted Tk 0.2 million profits, excluding production cost and other miscellaneous expenditures, by selling the vegetables.

Farmer Idris Ali of the same area said he decided to cultivate cauliflower and cabbage on five bighas of land and he has already sown the saplings on two bighas.
