Spillways of Kaptai Dam open as water level rises

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 05: The 16 spillways of Kaptai Dam were opened on Tuesday as the water rose to dangerous levels due to heavy rains and onrush of upstream water.

According to sources, 16 spillways of the dam were opened by 6 inches around 8:30 am releasing 9000 cusecs of water into the Karnaphuli river every second.

At 1:00am the water level of Kaptai lake was recorded at 108.5 MSL (Mean Sea Level), receding from the danger level. The water capacity of the lake is 109 MSL.

Manager of Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station Engineer Mahmud Hasan told the media that there was no danger of flooding any area.

Meanwhile, five units of the Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant is operational.

The Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station has been generating 210 to 212 MW of power per day due to the rise of the Kaptai Lake water level since July 11 last. This is the highest power generation of the power station in recent years. The Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station generated 205 MW of power per day last year (2024).
