24 businesses sued over VAT evasion at trade fair

FE Report | January 30, 2019 00:00:00

The Value Added Tax (VAT) authorities filed on Tuesday cases against some 24 business entities over VAT evasion at the ongoing Dhaka International Trade Fair-2019.

The companies were suspected of cheating the taxman through depositing lower than the amount of VAT collected from consumers.

The Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate Dhaka (west) sued them under the VAT law.

Dr Moinul Khan, commissioner of the zone, said a team conducted the drive at some 35 stalls on the fair ground to monitor their compliance with VAT payment rules.

"Of them, the inspectors found VAT-related irregularities involving 24 organisations," he told the FE.

Unless the companies properly pay the due amount of VAT, they would not get back their deposited money for the fair, he maintained.

In a statement, the VAT zone said the team found that some companies collected VAT from the consumers but did not deposit the same amounts to the public exchequer.

They also found some companies selling products without VAT chalans while many were skipping paying VAT as per rules.

During the drive, the team warned some other companies to follow the proper VAT payment rules.

The entities sued include Kiam Metal Industries Limited, Delhi Aluminum, Navana Furniture, Nabisco Biscuit and Bread Limited, Hazir Biriyani, Smart Zone, Royelex Metal Industries, FG Jewelry, Desh Collection, Shahjahan Store, Pearl House, Jeshan Collection and Kamal Enterprise.

Nasir Abedin Traders, Ashraf and Brother, Nida Trading, Grihini Biriyani and Kebab, Hashem Foods Ltd, Miyako, Lovello Ice Cream, SKB Stainless Steel Mills Ltd, Shahi Kasturi Kebab, Bengal Melamine Ltd, Brothers' Furniture Ltd, and Fashion Jewelry were also sued.

The authorities would dispose of the cases as per the VAT law, the statement said.

There are some 518 stalls at the annual trade show. The authorities expect Tk 60 million in VAT from the fair. Last year, the National Board of Revenue received Tk 52 million in VAT from the event.
