Achievement in shipping remarkable: Khalid

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 15: Bangladesh has earned remarkable notable achievement in maritime and shipping sector. The country's shipping sector has witnessed a remarkable development in the last one decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest a passing out parade at the National Maritime Institute at Saltgola in the port city this morning.

He said the world is aware of the progress made by Bangladesh in different sectors, including shipping. The country's maritime institutes are doing their best for supplying skilled manpower in international maritime sector, he observed.

"Our cadets from maritime institutes are representing the country as its ambassadors in (different parts of) the world," he said.

Presently the National Maritime Institute is conducting courses in Chattogram and Madaripur, he mentioned.

"We have to develop our education in maritime sector to earn (more) foreign currencies. The skilled manpower who passed from our institutes are working internationally with reputation. They are also employed in the ship-building industry now," he added.

Director General of Shipping Commodore Sayed Ariful Islam was present as the special guest and addressed the function. Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral Zulfiquar Aziz and NMI's Principal Captain Faisal Azim also attended the programme.

A total of 100 cadets from Deck department, 64 from Engine department and 178 from rating department have passed out in the current year under the national institutes at Chattogram and Madaripur. The state minister handed over certificates to the cadets.
