AnonTex Group seeks more loans from Janata Bank

Muhith unhappy with banks

FE Report | August 21, 2018 00:00:00

AnonTex Group, one of the big clients of Janata Bank, is seeking more loans in the name of working capital to run its industrial units.

The conglomerate earlier took out about Tk 55 billion in loans from the state-owned bank but is yet to repay.

The central bank, after carrying out an investigation, asked the Janata Bank to put Tk 26 billion loans, out of the total loans, in the default category and not to provide any further loans to AnonTex Group.

AnonTex Group chairman Md Younus (Badal) and Janata Bank chairman Luna Shamsuddoha and the bank's managing director Abdus Salam Azad met finance minister AMA Muhith at his secretariat office on Monday to get a solution.

The finance minister suggested that the AnonTex Group chairman should reply to the queries forwarded to him by the Janata Bank as per the instruction of the central bank.

"Actually, AnonTex is failing to run its units due to the lack of working capital," Mr Muhith told newsmen after the meeting.

The AnonTex Group has not been given necessary working capital, he said.

Mr Muhith, however, said that as per Janata Bank's calculation, the AnonTex Group is a loan defaulter.

"It is true that AnonTex has borrowed Tk 55 billion as loans. But the amount of default loan is much smaller," the minister said replying to a query.

However, Mr Muhith said the industrial units of AnonTex Group were in first class category and has been exporting goods to countries like Switzerland and Germany. The group's main investment is in the textile and apparel sector.

Meanwhile, the finance minister was unhappy with banks, saying that they do not keep their words.

"It's true for all banks. They create the problem with the industries," Mr Muhith said.

AnonTex Group chairman Mr Badal, however, declined to elaborate the issues discussed in the meeting to the newsmen.

He said he met the finance minister to share a future working plan of his company.

Replying to a query, Mr Badal said he has already repaid some portion of the loan and his company is not a defaulter.

Janata Bank chairman Luna Shamsuddoha kept mum about the issue.
