Assess impact of factories on Sundarbans: JS body

A parliamentary watchdog on Monday recommended the government to conduct a study to assess how environmental pollution, caused by factories in Sundarbans areas, is harming the public health.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change came up with the recommendation at a meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair, reports UNB.
"With a view to protecting the environment of the Sundarbans, the committee recommended conducting a survey for getting comprehensive statistics over how the environmental pollution, caused by industrial factories in Sundarbans areas, is harming the public health," said a handout.
Besides, the parliamentary body suggested the Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC) to place before the committee primary statistics about its occupied and non-occupied lands within the next three months.
Committee members Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Jafar Alam and Rezaul Karim Bablu attended the meeting.
