January 12, 2018 00:00:00

By virtue of realistic and vibrant steps taken by the government, Bangladesh has attained remarkable success in economic and social sectors in the last nine years, said speakers at a post-rally discussion in Rajshahi city on Thursday, reports BSS.

They said the successes are visible in all the major and vital areas - ICT, agriculture, education, reduction in infant and maternal mortality rate, poverty reduction, safety net and women empowerment. The nation is getting international awards one after another as recognition of the achievements.

They were addressing the inaugural session of a three-day 'Development Fair-2018' for the fourth consecutive time in the northwestern divisional city in festive mood to focus the government's successes relating to the economic and social development.

The fair organised by the district administration is being held in the Rajshahi Collegiate School playground where more than 91 government and associate development organisations are showcasing their respective development achievements through separate stalls.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman and Additional Commissioner Aminul Islam addressed the session as the chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Mahbubor Rahman, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Nisharul Arif, District Council Chairman Muhammad Ali Sarker and Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Shalahuddin also spoke.

Nur-Ur-Rahman said digitisation of government services and expansion of Bangladesh's IT economy was a core principle of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's elections in 2008. As part of her 2014 election pledges, the prime minister launched "Digital Bangladesh, Vision 2021," a plan to fully digitise Bangladesh by 2021.

In the past, the rural poor in Bangladesh had been forced to take long travel to receive the simplest of government services and information, losing wages in the process.

To remedy this, the government created the Access to Information online programme, which brings government services to its citizens. They can access government sites, see public exam results, read online textbooks and take advantage of a range of services staying at home.

Before the inaugural session, a rally was brought out from Green Plaza of Rajshahi City Corporation and it ended at the fair venue after parading different city streets. Large number of government and non-government officials, Freedom Fighters, teachers and volunteers joined the rally.

Side by side with the fair, a number of seminars and reality shows will be held for the students relating to the government's success and SDG achievements.

Nine selected educational institutions will present documentary films on improvements. The fair will present cultural functions based on the War of Liberation and successes of the present government.

Apart from projection of achievements, the fair has also provision of giving overall idea on SDC and its possible outcomes.
