BGMEA, BKMEA, BTMA urge factory closure today

The country's leading textile and apparel trade bodies -- BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA -- have requested their members to keep all factories closed today (Wednesday), expressing solidarity with the state mourning declared by the government following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Ms Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday. Following her death, the government declared three days of state mourning along with a one-day general holiday for Wednesday.

BKMEA in its statement, however, said that industrial units fix their holidays at the beginning of the year as per labour law provision of 118 of 2016 and Labour Rules 2015 and that other government-declared holidays are not applicable to industrial sectors.

Nevertheless, to show respect for the three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the trade bodies urged members to keep their establishments closed on the day.
