Bill to exempt sugarcane growers from road tax

February 19, 2018 00:00:00

A bill was placed in parliament on Sunday to repeal the existing 'Sugar Road Development Cess Ordinance', aiming to exempt the sugarcane growers from paying taxes for development of roads in sugar mill catchment areas, reports UNB.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu placed the 'Sugar (Road Development Cess Ordinance) (Abolish) Bill, 2018', which was later sent to the respective parliamentary standing committee for further examination for two weeks.

The original law was promulgated through ordinance in 1960.

Roads in the sugar mill areas are now constructed and maintained by different government departments, agencies and local government bodies, making the 1960 ordinance dysfunctional.

So, the government has decided to repeal the law, according to the proposed law.

Under the existing law, taxes used to be realised from the sugarcane growers for the development of roads in the catchment areas of sugar mills.
