BSTI mandates quality certificate for 43 products

The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has made it mandatory to obtain quality standard certificates for the marketing of 43 products.

The BSTI took the decision at its 34th council meeting in the city on Sunday, with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mamun Humayun in the chair.

The products that must have quality certificates before their marketing include low fat milk, flavoured milk, ice lolly, natural mehendi, dish washing liquid, liquid toilet cleaner, nail polish, gold, cotton saree produced by power loom, passengers car tyre and rim, hollow clay bricks and blocks and power transformer.

The industries minister asked the BSTI officials to take initiatives immediately to set the standards of halal foods so that they can pass the international standard certification, which will help increase the export of halal foods.

He also urged them to work with utmost dedication and sincerity for the expansion of quality industrialisation at the grassroots level.

State Minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder stressed the need to step up the drive against adulterated and sub-standard foods in the markets.

The meeting decided to strengthen the BSTI's activities in order to ensure quality of the products.

It also approved a proposal on the expansion of BSTI's activities to all 64 districts.

The meeting also discussed issues relating to mobile court activities in 43 districts, factory inspection and land acquisition for setting up new offices in some districts.

Industries secretary KM Ali Azam, Director General of BSTI Dr Md Nazrul Anwar, and high officials of the ministries of fisheries and livestock, home affairs, textiles and jute, information, agriculture, health and family welfare, and power, energy and mineral resources, Export Promotion Bureau, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Consumers Association of Bangladesh were present at the meeting.
