Cold wave halts salt cultivation

COX'S BAZAR, Jan 09: The ongoing cold wave has badly hampered salt cultivation in the coastal areas as well as fishing in the Bay.

As mercury dropped to lower levels, chilly weather has restricted most salt farmers and fishermen to their homes since Saturday, bringing salt production to a halt and causing fish supply to the markets to fall, sources said.

On Tuesday, the Cox's Bazar met office recorded the lowest temperature of 12.3 degree celsius in the town.

The severe cold conditions have also affected thousands of tourists now visiting the beach town during this peak tourist season.

Labourers are also going through very tough times as many of them could not find work in biting chill.

Thousands of Rohingya refugees have also been suffering a lot as cold-related diseases have broken out in their camps.

The cold wave may continue for the next two days, met office sources said.
