Bangladesh will send caregivers to 12 countries as part of promoting skilled migration, officials said.

To advance the process, state-run Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) signed a memorandum of understanding with Universal Medical and Technical Training Institute or UMTTI to start skill training for caregivers on Thursday.

BMET director general Salim Reza and Universal chairman Priti Chakraborty signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations in the city's Probashi Kallyan Bhaban.

Addressing the function as the special guest, Namita Halder, secretary of the ministry of expatriates' welfare and overseas employment (MoEWOE) said the ministry had signed deals with companies in 12 countries to send caregivers from Bangladesh.

Besides, an opportunity has been created in Japan through signing Memorandum of Cooperation recently to send workers in this trade.

"As the number of elderly people is very high in Japan, we have an opportunity to send caregivers there," she said, adding that they had already begun Japanese language training for aspirant male and female job seekers.

Apart from the training, job seekers will learn culture, food habits, law and regulations and health protection system of their destination countries, she added.

Expatriates' welfare minister Nurul Islam said that Bangladesh is sending technical interns to Japan, which is a "big achievement".

The working environment, wages and others benefits of technical interns are higher than those of unskilled workers, he added.

Gazi Mohammad Julhash, director general of Wage Earners' Welfare Board (WEWB), Maran Kumar Chakraborty, managing director of Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) were present at the programme, among others.
