Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said on Sunday the corporation will never allow the businesses to carry out business which is risky to the lives of city dwellers.
"We want to see an expansion of business, but the city corporation will not allow the businesses posing risks to the lives of city dwellers," he said while speaking at a discussion meeting as the chief guest.
The discussion meeting titled "Fire Hazard, Safe Management, Challenges and Way Forward" was arranged at State University in the city's Kalabagan area.
The mayor said the capacity of utility service providers did not increase proportionately, considering a growing number of people, economic activities and infrastructures in the city.
Stressing the need for strengthening coordination among utility service providers by overcoming barriers to their institutional integration, he blamed lack of awareness among city dwellers irrespective of their educational background.
He also called upon all concerned to take measures to prevent road accidents and fire incidents. "It is possible to avert road accidents if we have a sense of awareness."
The mayor urged the businessmen to be conscious about prevention of fire incidents and install fire extinguishers at their business organisations to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes if it breaks out.
With Vice-chancellor of State University Dr Md Sayeed Salam in the chair, the discussion was also addressed by Major Shakil of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.
