Eid shopping in Rangpur gets momentum

RANGPUR, May 21 (BSS): Eid shopping has gained momentum in Rangpur city with thousands of buyers rushing to markets and shopping places triggering record sales almost two weeks ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.

Leaders of business bodies said buyers are trying to complete their purchase of Eid items ahead of the biggest religious festival of Muslims aiming at avoiding the last moment unbearable rush in hot and humid condition at the markets and shopping centres.

Eid shopping has already reached the peak at super markets, shopping malls and complexes and roadside makeshift shops amid tight security measures.

Senior Vice President of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) Mostoba Hossain Ripon said selling has already reached a satisfactory level and the business hit record.

Incomes of common people have also increased, he said.

"The business places have worn festive looks with customers, including men, women, adolescents, housewives, girls, boys, students and youths buying items of their own choice," he added.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police control room sources said security measures and monitoring of the law and order have been tightened to enable common people shop without untoward incidents in the northern-most divisional city.

According to market sources, prices of clothes for males, females, babies and children are almost 30 to 40 per cent higher this time than that of the last year though the increased price has no visible impact on purchasing capacity of buyers.

Jamal Market, Maya Exclusive Fashion House, 'Adi Janata', Bismillah Garments, Madina Garments, Golden Tower, 'Rangan', 'Zila Parishad Biponi Bitan', 'Shah

Amanat', 'Rajanigandha', Jahaz Company Shopping Complex, City Plaza, 'Karupannya', Salek Market, Station Market, Rajib Gandhi Market, Honumantola Market and other shopping malls and centres in the city.

Talking to BSS on Tuesday, shoppers at different city markets said they were purchasing clothes, cosmetics and other items for babies, children, youths, males and females at much higher prices than the previous year.

Each of three-piece (for female) is being sold at prices between Tk 1,200 and 20,000, sari Tk 1,200-45,000, pant piece Tk 1,000-3,500, jeans pant Tk 2,000-5,000 and shirt piece Tk 1,000-3,500.

University students Mehedi Hassan Rafiul Islam, Aklima Begum and Putul Khatun at 'Super Market' said they already purchased Eid clothes of their own choices this year at a price 40 per cent higher on an average compared to the last year.

School students Shahina Akhter, Homayra Banu and Kokila Begum at 'Zila Parishad Biponi Bitan' said they purchased most of their Eid items, including clothes, at higher prices this year than in 2018.

Couple Noor Mohammad and Sonali Chowdhury came with their daughters Malika, 15, and Chandona, 12, to Jahaz Company Shopping Complex and purchased

Eid clothes, cosmetics and other goods for their children at higher rates this year.

Talking to the news agency, businessmen Azgar Hossain, Kabir Ahmed and Mizanur Rahman at Honumantola Market expressed their happiness over good sales of

cloth, readymade garment and other items this year adding that the business will be better every day from now on till the day before the festival.

Traders Altaf Hossain, Imran Ali, Akkas Ali and Lokman Hossain at Super Market were also happy over sales of various items, cosmetics and other goods and hoped that the sales will continue to increase in the coming days.

"The traders are expecting a record business this time as sales would continue to increase till the last day before Eid-ul-Fitr as living standard of common people notably improved in the last ten years," said RCCI President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu.
