Terming jute pulp an opportunity for the revival of the golden fibre, experts at a discussion on Sunday suggested scrutinising the proposed Jute Pulp Paper Act.
They also recommended providing the jute sector with required policy support to help boost the sector.
The suggestions came at a plenary session on 'Sustainable jute pulp paper and jute sector development' as part of a daylong international conference styled as 'Destination Bangladesh'.
The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) organised the event at the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) marking its 60th anniversary.
President of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Barrister Nihad Kabir moderated the session where former adviser to the caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman presented a keynote paper.
Scientific adviser to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation Dr Mubarak Ahmad Khan, and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Rina Parveen spoke on the occasion.
The experts at the programme also called for providing proper incentives to new entrepreneurs, facilitation of new technology and organizing high-level policy dialogue involving stakeholders concerned in this regard.
In his keynote paper, Mr Hossain Zillur Rahman said the country witnessed an industrial wave in the mid-1950s centring the jute which later lost its position to plastic and other synthetic elements.
"However, success of Bangladeshi scientists in mapping the jute genome sequence along with growing concern for the environment have created new hope for the golden fibre," he said.
In his speech, Mr Mubarak Ahmad said further in-depth research is required to benefit from jute to use it as pulp.
Such massive use of the cash crop will help both the farmers and environment, said Mr Ahmad who invented biodegradable polythene bags from jute.
